West Hobart Gourmet Meats display cabinet

Shane Mundy has been in the meat business for more than 30 years. He bought his own business the day he finished his apprenticeship.

Today, his West Hobart Gourmet Meats retail outlet is counted among the finest meat stores in Australia. The shop has expanded through the years to now include two cool rooms, a prep area including hanging, a smallgoods room, a well-equipped stainless steel kitchen, and a smokehouse.

The shop has become well-known for stocking Tasmanian-grown free-range meat and poultry. This means highest quality and superior flavour.

A butcher must keep in touch with customers’ needs. We glean ideas from their questions and feedback.

Our team ...

There are qualified butchers in the store seven days a week. Shane and his team of four skilled butchers work hard to ensure that there are no gaps in the display cabinet. This means customers can feel assured that they’ll find what they want when they walk through the door. Two additional sales assistants help to serve customers on weekends.

Our products

When customers buy meat from West Hobart Gourmet Meats they can be confident that they are buying free-range Tasmanian meat products, chemical-free and preservative-free.

You can recognise our meat and packaged products by the familiar green grass logo which includes Shane’s signature. You can be sure of a product of the same high West Hobart Meats standards wherever you see Shane Mundy through that green grass!

Our meat is available from our shop in Hill Street, at the Howrah Point store and at Adams store in West Hobart.

Our name ...

Over the years, a number of different names have been used for the store in Hill Street. Hill Street Gourmet Meats was used from 2004 until January 2013.

During 2012 we became aware that some of our customers were confused about a possible connection between Hill Street Gourmet Meats and another business in Hobart using a trade mark including the words Hill Street and selling meat products under its trade mark.

We decided to change our trading name to ‘West Hobart Gourmet Meats’ to save our customers any confusion over the origin of our goods and services and to end any future conflict with other traders in West Hobart.

Only the name changed ... customers can be assured that they are still buying the same free-range, chemical-free and preservative-free premium Tasmanian meat products. Our high standards of service continue unchanged.

On December 4th, I organised a Christmas musical soirée for thirty guests at Dysart House. John Wilson, whose catering business John & Peter is generally regarded as the finest in Australia, flew down to create the buffet.
